Yorba Linda has 1,327 people to the square mile against Fullerton's 2,416, and the difference is all yard. What is poured here is sized for the lot, and the lot sets the access, the load and the edge.
A tract house in Fullerton has a 20 foot drive and a side yard a barrow fits through. A Yorba Linda house has a 3 car garage, a 40 to 60 foot drive, and a pad beside it for the motorhome or the horse trailer, a load a 4 inch slab is not built for. The yard behind runs to a fence with a city trail beyond it, or to the top of a graded slope on the hill tracts, and a slab that ends at either has to be detailed for it. A patio poured to the edge of a slope has only fill under its outer foot.
So we pour a Yorba Linda drive and its pad 5 inches thick on 4 inches of compacted base, with number 4 steel on an 18 inch grid under the pad, because a loaded trailer is 10,000 pounds on 4 small patches. Yorba Linda garages are 3 car boxes from the 1980s and 1990s, and the slab often cracks along the fill edge of the pad. When the crack is through we replace the slab, 5 inches over a vapor barrier, troweled for a coating. A slab that is dusting but sound is ground and sealed.
Exposed aggregate and salt finish suit Yorba Linda pool decks and the paths along the trail side of a lot, because a smooth trowel is a slip beside water and a bare gray slab reads hard against a planted yard. The stone is washed out at the right hour, then sealed.
Walls are the Yorba Linda job, holding a yard flat above a slope or above a trail. Under 4 feet we build on a footing dug 18 inches into firm ground, gravel and a perforated pipe behind, with no engineer needed. Over 4 feet, or holding a slope, the wall is engineered and checked.
A Yorba Linda lot has room for a casita, and a good many still have a barn, so an interior slab here is a tack room floor as often as a guest house. We lay a vapor barrier on compacted base, pour 4 inches, float it for tile or polish, and saw the joints to suit the room.
Our yard is in Fullerton, and Bastanchury Road runs east from it, through Placentia and into Yorba Linda without a turn, so a crew is on a Yorba Linda lot in 20 minutes with no freeway in the way. Permits go to the City of Yorba Linda Building Division at City Hall on Casa Loma Avenue. A drive or a patio at grade on your own lot needs none. A wall over 4 feet, a footing under a cover, and anything cut into a graded slope goes through plan check, and we file it and meet the inspector.
The city incorporated in 1967 and has held onto two things since, its lot sizes and its trails. The horse trails run behind the back fences of whole tracts off Fairmont Boulevard and along the flood control channels, and a good many lots on them still keep a horse, which is why a barn slab or a tack room floor is an ordinary request here. Around Yorba Linda Boulevard and Main Street the older streets are flat, and the ground is the same citrus loam Fullerton sits on.
The association tracts want to see what shows from the street, so a stamped entry court or a colored drive goes to the architectural committee with a sample before it goes to the building division. Savi Ranch by the 91 is the one commercial patch, where a lot or a loading apron is a different specification altogether. Summers on the hill pass 100 degrees, and from July to September a Yorba Linda pour starts at 6 and is finished by the time the sun clears the ridge.
The lot is walked to its edges first, the slope, the trail fence and the gate the truck comes through, because those three set the method. Then it is measured, written and built in that order.

The old slab comes out, soft fill at the pad edge is dug and replaced, and 4 inches of Class 2 base is placed and plate-compacted under it all.
Nothing at grade needs a permit. Walls, footings and slope work go through City Hall on Casa Loma Avenue, and the association gets a sample.

In 20 minutes, up Bastanchury Road through Placentia with no freeway. Yorba Linda is close enough that a forgotten tool is a nuisance and not a lost day.
Not on the ground alone. The California Residential Code sets a setback from the top of a descending slope, and the outer foot of a hill pad is fill never meant to carry a slab. We either hold the patio back inside that setback, or, if you want the edge, carry it on a footing taken to firm ground below the fill and drained behind. Poured over the edge without either, it drops at the corner in a few winters.
14 days, and a car after 7. The pad is poured 5 inches thick on a Monday or Tuesday, cut the same day and kept damp for the first 3 days, which is where its strength comes from. Walk on it after 24 hours. Most Yorba Linda jobs are 3 days on site, with the trailer on the street or at a neighbor's for the 2 weeks in between.
Placentia and Brea to the west, on the same road we drive in on, Villa Park to the south over the 91, and Diamond Bar on the far side of the hills.
